Before any season of sanctioned racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats begins, a heavy truck pulls a heavy drag made up of multiple steel I-beams across the platted race courses to smooth out the inch-high irregularities that developed during the flats’ annual flooding. Doing so ensures higher speeds and fewer crashes, but has also contributed to the diminishing of the Bonneville Salt Flats over the past 60 years, according to a recently released University of Utah study.
