The 427 competition Cobra was to be Shelby American’s secret weapon, the production car that would soundly defeat Ferrari in sports car races on its European home turf. Complications with FIA homologation delayed its international racing debut (and ultimately limited the car’s appeal), and just 16 examples were sold (plus after, three more) before Shelby American began converting remaining inventory into “Semi-Competition” models. On March 9, CSX3006, an early production 1965 Shelby 427 competition Cobra raced to a European victory by Bob Bondurant, heads to auction in Florida, part of RM Sotheby’s 2019 Amelia Island sale.
